Though women and children make up 81% of the nearly 1.53 million refugees in Uganda, refugee settlement leadership has historically lacked women’s representation. Cultural barriers and limited knowledge of rights and access to education kept women from participating in decision-making processes. . In 2018, UN Women began providing training for the women and youth of Adjumani and Yumbe districts, which host 30.1 percent of Uganda’s total refugee population. Khan wrote Fruit Chatt, a short comedy film addressing the challenges she went through from being disabled growing up in Pakistan. Her motivation stemmed from not seeing herself represented in the world: ““When I looked at the world, I didn’t see a space for myself. Not in TV series, not when I read a book … there was nobody who represented people with disabilities. Male journalists in Afghanistan are covering their faces on TV in solidarity with women colleagues after new Taliban decree. The Taliban has specifically ordered female TV news anchors to cover their faces while on air. Their decree raised a host of concerns, not only about women's freedom of expression but about whether they would be able to continue doing their jobs. Most female anchors have since been seen with their faces covered, but so have many of their male colleagues, who have donned face masks on air in solidarity. @zarifa.ghafari, the youngest female mayor to serve in Afghanistan, is an inspiration to us all! Ghafari fought for months to take the position of mayor and finally started her work in November 2019, where she faced constant harassment, protests, and threats while persevering, to change many Afghans opinions on the roles of women. In 2020, after the United States withdrew troops from Afghanistan, her life was in danger after surviving multiple assassination attempts from living under the rule of the Taliban. Ghafari was then forced to leave her home country and escaped in a footwell of a car to Germany, where she now has her own radio channel as well as a humanitarian foundation that advocates and fights daily for women's rights. The Ukrainian Refugee Crisis Is a Women’s Crisis. Approximately 90% of the displaced are women and children. Because of military conscription, Ukraine does not allow most men between the ages of 18 and 60 to leave the country. So the more than two million people who have crossed the border to escape the Russian invasion are women, children and a few elderly men. Unpaid work, or non-market work, is a key barrier to empowering women in our workforce. Redistributing unpaid work would allow men to benefit from new employment and family responsibility. We can destigmatize unpaid work, and disrupt the current gender racial and class biases associated with household and care work. Achieving these steps will unlock the potential of women’s economic empowerment.

Women face obstacles in pursuing leadership in all fields. It is important that we work to develop policies that are inclusive rather than limiting, breaking down barriers for women pursuing leadership roles, and advocate for greater representation. Whether it be in politics and government, or businesses and organizations, women and girls around the world need to see themselves represented by women like them. COVID-19 has intensified the risk of violence against women and girls. Lockdowns have confined many to their homes, sometimes with abusive partners, putting them at greater risk of domestic violence. Even before the pandemic, physical and sexual violence against women were all too common. Data from several countries show an increase in reporting of domestic violence to helplines, women’s refuges and shelters, and the police - and cases of domestic violence have increased by 30% in some countries. Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a blatant violation of human rights. At least 200 million girls and women have been subjected to FGM in 31 countries. Although this harmful practice has been declining, there are still countries where FGM is almost universal – where at least 9 in 10 girls and women have been cut. COVID-19 is interrupting programmes to end FGM, which could threaten progress. When FGM is no longer practiced, #WEALLRISE. Marriage before the age of 18 is a human rights violation, mostly affecting girls, and can lead to a lifetime of disadvantage and deprivation. And school closures and widening poverty as a result of the pandemic could put more girls at risk. One in 5 women between the ages of 20 and 24 was married before the age of 18 around 2019, compared with about one in 4 ten years earlier. Today, the risk of child marriage is highest in sub-Saharan Africa, where more than one in 3 women between the ages of 20 and 24 were married before the age of 18. SDG 5: To achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. So, what is an SDG? The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all @UnitedNations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests. We pay homage to Egyptian author, activist and physician, Nawal el Saadawi, and her work for women’s rights in the patriarchal Arab world. Nawal passed away earlier this week, at the age of 89. She spent most of her adult life fighting for change in #genderequality - even at the age of 79 she joined the demonstrators in Tahrir Square in Cairo in protests to overthrow President Hosni Mubarak.  #NawalElSaadawi #RestInPower

Today is U.S. #EqualPayDay. Women in the U.S. who work full-time, year-round are paid .82 cents for every dollar paid to white men. This date symbolizes how far into the year women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year. For many women of color, it is even less: Black women are paid .62c, Native American women .60c and Latina women .55c, and AAIP women are paid .85c. We are inspired and encouraged by today's address by the @UnitedNations Secretary-General António Guterres to the UN @HumanRightsCouncil, calling for a reset...“to reshape.. rebuild... recover better, guided by #humanrights and #humandignity for all.” The speech underscored that “no human rights scourge is more prevalent than #genderinequality,” acknowledging that the COVID-19 pandemic has both “further exacerbated entrenched discrimination against women and girls...and at the same time… has highlighted the power and effectiveness of women’s leadership.
